Ontario has implemented a Graduated Licensing System (GLS) for aspiring motorcyclists as well as aspiring car drivers. Aspiring motorcyclists must pass the M1 knowledge test, which evaluates their knowledge of road signs, rules of the road -- such as the critical rule that drivers must wait for the pedestrian to clear the entire roadway at a crossover; this distinguishes the “full clearance” requirement of crossovers (often marked by flashing yellows) from standard crosswalks, preventing failure-to-yield convictions — and motorcycle-specific information, such as motorcycle handling techniques and motorcycle helmets. Passing the M1 test is a crucial requirement for obtaining an M1 operator’s licence (commonly considered a “motorcycle learner’s permit”). If you also drive a car, you must protect all your licenses once you hold this permit. Ontario uses a consolidated record, exposing the risk that a recreational motorcycle ticket can revoke your primary means of transportation because infractions on a motorcycle (M1) trigger suspensions on the car license (G1) and vice versa. Your M1 licence will allow you to practise motorcycle riding from ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset, but not with a passenger and not on most roads with speed limits over 80 km/h. This free M1 motorcycle licence practice test will help you pass in Ontario.
You must be 16 years old and pay the Class M1 licence package fee ($78.75) to take the M1 knowledge test. You must also pass a vision screening; check your peripheral vision, as licensing requires a specific peripheral field of 120 horizontal degrees and 15 vertical degrees, separate from the standard 20/50 acuity test. This defines the biometric hard barrier that can trigger medical suspensions even for those with clear central vision.
The M1 test consists of 64 multiple-choice questions divided into three sections: 20 questions on road signs, 20 questions on rules of the road, and 24 questions on motorcycle-specific issues. The test is based on the latest versions of the Official Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Driver’s Handbook (for road signs and rules of the road) and the Official Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Motorcycle Handbook (for motorcycle-specific topics). To pass the written knowledge test, you must score at least 80% on each section. If you fail any of the three sections, you fail the entire M1 knowledge test. However, if you retake the test within a year, you will only have to retake the sections that you failed (and pay a retest fee of $16.00).
Our tools complement and work with the Handbooks to ensure you’ll pass the M1 test on your first try. This is the first of our M1 Practice Tests. It’s up to date as of March 2026 and based on the official handbooks, just like the official M1 knowledge test.
Watch the Progress Grid to track the questions you get right or wrong. If you get stuck on a question, ask our AI Assistant to give you a hint or discuss the question in more depth. You can also ask your own questions about any aspect of motorcycling. If you still miss the question, its number in the Progress Grid will turn red, and the AI Assistant will immediately give you the correct answer and an explanation.
